Position Title: Emergency Department Director
Location: Ottumwa, IA
Salary: $101,000 - $137,000, with partial relocation assistance available

Position Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced and dynamic Emergency Department Director to lead and manage the clinical and administrative functions of their Emergency Department. This position will ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care while maintaining adherence to regulatory standards. The Director will be responsible for implementing the organization's mission and vision, managing nursing personnel, and ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical leadership and expertise in emergency medicine, aligning departmental goals with organizational mission and nursing services.
  • Lead nursing and organizational policy development, actively involving staff in decision-making processes.
  • Ensure accountability for the quality and appropriateness of care provided in the Emergency Department.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and provide guidance to nursing personnel, ensuring their performance aligns with departmental standards.
  • Oversee coordination of nursing services with other healthcare disciplines to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Manage the recruitment, selection, retention, and development of emergency department personnel.
  • Handle staffing and scheduling responsibilities to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Ensure proper orientation, education, and ongoing professional development for all department staff.
  • Develop and manage the department's budget, ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Foster a learning environment that supports the education and training of nursing and other healthcare students.
  • Oversee the hospital's trauma program and ensure compliance with state trauma designation requirements.
  • Maintain awareness and compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, state, and local regulations, as well as internal policies and professional standards.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in emergency nursing and pre-hospital care practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage staff effectively.
  • Proven ability to resolve patient and staff concerns quickly and professionally.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Proficient in public speaking and training, with experience in creating presentations.
  • Decisive and capable of exercising sound judgment under pressure.
  • Skilled in data collection, analysis, and presentation for performance evaluation and quality improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field. Candidates with an Associate's degree in Nursing and demonstrated competencies will be considered, provided they are enrolled in a baccalaureate program.
    • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in emergency care.
    • At least 1-2 years of experience in a clinical leadership role.
  • Licenses and Certifications:

    • Current RN license in Iowa or a compact state nursing license that permits practice in Iowa.
    • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
    • Must obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications within six months of hire.
    • Must obtain Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within one year of hire.

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Active RN license in the state of Iowa or a compact state with eligibility to practice in Iowa.
  • BLS certification.
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience in emergency care, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership capacity.
